Sleeping Calico Cat
Nowell’s Mold #3321 - 3326

Paint: Nowell’s Showcase Colors - Opaque Stain   Artist Translucents
Brushon Glaze Coat

Brushes:  Silver Falcon

Technique:  Sherry L. Porter

Technique:
1.    To properly prepared bisque, apply 2 smooth, even coats of CTU-8.  Use either a “taklon” or soft “ox hair” brush.  Be sure to allow ample drying time between coats and before proceeding to the next step.  (You may find it helpful to tint the first coat of CTU-8 with a small amount of CT-17 Eggplant, to give it a slight purple tint.  It is much easier to get proper coverage using this process.)
2.    Check the piece to be sure that you have completely covered the bisque by brushing a small amount of CTA-4 Antiquing Solution over the entire piece.  If any area has not been sealed, it will show as a discolored spot at this point.  Simply dry the area with a soft cloth and re-apply CTU-8.
3.    You will use an “antiquing” type process to decorate the piece.  Keep in mind that each time you apply a new color over an existing color, you will basically be replacing or just highlighting the previous color, depending upon the technique used.  Antiquing is done using a hog bristle brush, commonly referred to as a “dry brush”.  Apply paint using the size brush most appropriate to the area in which you are working.  Wipe back with a soft, absorbent, lint-free cloth.  Old tee shirt material or blue Shop Towels work very well.
4.    Place a small amount of CTB blending media onto one area of your pallet.  Place a small amount of the assigned color in a separate area.  Tip the brush into the blending media, then into the antiquing color, usually CT-20 Dark Chocolate.  Working in sections, brush color on, careful to spread it out as you go (a little bit of paint goes a LONG way!!), pat to absorb the excess oil and set the color, then wipe back to expose detail, highlight and create natural shadows.  During this process, if the color looks greasy and is wiping off too much, use less blending media.  If it is “grabbing” too much, use a bit more blending media.  Additional lightening can be done with a small amount of Antiquing Solution on your cloth, wiping gently until desired tone is achieved.
5.    To “rouge” color, pick up a small amount of color on your cloth, work it into the cloth using a circular motion on a non-porous surface (glazed tile, shinny side of freezer paper etc.).  This will leave only pigment on the surface of the cloth.  Gently rub the color on to the assigned area.  Repeat this process if a brighter color is desired.

6.    This “Garfield-like” cat is decorated by antiquing entire piece with CT2-20 Dark Chocolate.
7.    The inside of the ears are a 50/50 mix of CT-04 Magenta and CT-18 Flesh.
8.    For the main color, place some CT-08 Orange Juice on your pallet.  Tint with a small amount of CT-09 Honey Mustard.  This will tone down the orange a bit.  Apply this color to all but the inner ears.  Highlight around the eyes with CT-09 Honey Mustard.
9.    His nose is CT-07 Red Clay.
10.  Dry brush random stripes and the tip of the tail and ears with CT-03 Black Tie
11.  Spray seal with two light coats of CTM Matte Spray Sealer.
12.  The eyes are completed in Opaque Stains.  Paint the eye with CO125 Lily Pond Green.  Create a starburst type effect, with CO123 Limelight.  The pupils, whisker spots, mouth outline and lashes are CO105 Raven Black.  Give the eyes a highlight dot with CO101 Snow Cap.  Allow time to dry, and then apply Brush-on Gloss Glaze to the eyes and nose.

I’d like to share a few fun tidbits that I discovered when researching the “calico” cat.  First of all, the calico is not a breed of cat, but an unusual coloring occurring across many breeds.  Virtually all calico cats are female.  The calico cat is the official cat of Maryland.  Its colors of orange, white and black are shared with the State bird, the Baltimore oriole and the Baltimore Checkerspot butterfly, the state insect.

6.   To decorate the cat as “calico cat”
7     Antique entire piece with CT-20 Chocolate Brown.
8     For the white areas, remove as much color as possible, using Antiquing Solution on your cloth.  Rouge these areas with CT-01 White Out.
9     Tint CT-08 Orange Juice with a small amount of CT-07 Red Clay.  This is for the orange-red areas of the cat.
10   Apply CT-03 Black Tie to the black areas.  You will just “pat” this color to remove any excess oil and expose detail.  If you wipe too much it will turn grey!!
11   Spray seal entire piece with 2 light coats of Spray Matte.  Allow to dry.
12   Paint the nose, whiskers, eyelashes and outline of mouth with CO 105 Raven Black.
13   Apply brush on gloss to the nose.

6.    To decorate the cat as “Socks”, place a small amount of CT-01 White Out on a pallet.  Tint with a few drops of CT2-20 Dark Chocolate and a few drops of blending media.  Antique the entire piece with this “beige” color.
7.    With some Antiquing Solution on your cloth, lighten the areas that are going to be white.  Once they are lightened, rouge on CT-01 White Out to the specified areas.
8.    The pads on the paws and inside of the ears are a 50/50 mixture of CT-04 Magenta and CT-18 Flesh.
9.    The remainder of the piece is antiqued with CT-03 Black Tie.  Don’t wipe too much off.  Simply blot the color with your cloth to expose the detail of the fur.
10.  Spray Seal with two light coats of CTM Matte Spray Sealer.
11.  The eyes are completed with Opaque Stains.  Fill in the eye with CO-125 Lily Pond Green.  Use a fine liner, such as the #585 20/0, to apply CO-123 Limelight, to create a “starburst” type effect.  Do this by starting out with an “X” in the center of the eye.  Continue making random length streaks, radiating out from the center of the “X”.  Apply CO-105 Raven Black to the pupil.  Using a small ball stylus, apply a dot of CO-101 Snow Cap to create highlights to the eyes.  Allow to dry, and then apply Brush-on Gloss Glaze to the eyes and nose.

6.    To decorate the “Siamese Twins” as shown:  Place a small amount of CT-01 White Out on your pallet.  Tint it with a few drops of CT2-20 Dark Chocolate.  Add a drop or two of Blending media.  This is the color to antique the entire piece.  Lighten the cats by using a bit of Antiquing solution on your cloth.  Wipe away most of the color, leaving just a bit of the “dirty white” in the creases.  If you would like them to be a bit lighter, rouge CT-01 White Out over the fur areas.
7.    Apply CT2-20 Chocolate Brown to the paws and bridge of nose, between the eyes.  Pat and wipe back to highlight.
8.    The inside of the ears is a 50/50 mix of CT-04 Magenta and CT-18 Flesh.
9.    Tint a small amount of CT-03 Black Tie with some CT2-20 Dark Chocolate.  This black-brown color is for the tail, nose, and ears.  Rouge this same color above the Dark Chocolate on the paws.
10.   Apply 2 light, even coats of CTM Matte Spray Finish.
11.   The eyes are completed with Opaque Stains.  Fill in the eye with CO-133 Hydrangea.  Use a fine liner, such as the #585 20/0 to apply CO-134 Newport Blue, creating a “starburst” type of effect.  Do this by starting out with an “X” in the center of the eye.  Continue making random length streaks, radiating out from the center of the “X”.  Apply CO-105 Raven Black to the pupil.  Using a small ball stylus, apply a dot of CO-101 Snow Cap.  Allow to dry, and then apply Brush-on Gloss Glaze to the eyes.
